All of us at some time or another need someone to talk to about problems that occur in our lives. And since we know that no-one is immune to stress, we all experience stress problems from time to time, for those that require professional help the growth in counselling provision is a welcome relief.
The Smithfield stress intervention model looks like this:
- Primary interventions - eliminating or minimising the stressors in the first place
- Secondary interventions - helping people to cope with stressors that cannot be eliminated e.g. resilience building (there are lots of articles in the Resource Centre devoted to resilience building)
- Tertiary interventions - providing support and rehabilitation services to those who are suffering from stress
Counselling is a tertiary intervention - designed for those that may need help with the symptoms of stress
Since a personal private life is off limits for line managers, it is best practice for businesses to offer counselling services to its staff in order to offer support for issues that may arise outside of work as well as inside of work.
The subscription area of the Resource Centre houses the latest academic evidence for the efficacy of counselling services, as well as many grey literature articles of case studies of how the best counselling services operate.
