The cost of stress-related absence is one of the most robust measures used in assessing the economic impact of work-related stress.  It is by no means the only one. 

Presenteeism, a term coined by Professor Cary Cooper is another indicator of the economic impact of work-related stress.  Presenteeism refers to the condition in which an employee is suffering from stress that is seriously affecting his or her work performance but who chooses not to go absent for a variety of reasons.  Presenteeism has a damaging effect on business productivity but it is notoriously difficult to measure
